Shop Workbench: Internet amalgam
I mentioned that I was finishing a shop workbench and now finally I am getting close to rounding out this project. Not sure I am ever really finished with a project but I will soon cease to work on this one because I would have to start over to make a new one if I did! I will tell you a bit about the workbench, show you the basic plans, and then tell you what I would change.
This workbench has a Paulk workbench top that has been modified to use in a shop as a primary workbench. You can find his plans at http://stores.modularmarket.com/paulk_homes/ . I will no doubt show you pictures of what I built but I will not gift you the plans. Hey Mr. Paulk originated the thing so go buy the plans if you want to make one. I will try to give you enough hints to help you make it successfully.
The bench has been modified by adding two Moxon style wood vises and two more standard looking wood bench vises. All of the vises are made with screw drive pipe clamps and have quick release levers. These vises are also bored for bench dogs to use with the Paulk top. The storage ports have also been modified both for the vises and to make the center ports fit to add drawers. The top will have 4 flush mount drawers total. The top is mounted on a screw driven lift system to allow it to be adjusted for height with in a fairly useful limit (more latter). The base the lift and top are mounted to is massive in size to allow stability. The base has the shape of an extended H. Where the bar of the H is the midline support for the leg pilasters. The pilasters are hollow and have a retractable caster system inside with a foot activated lift and release... Ok that is the verbal description. I will have to get all the pictures and various pieces of the plan together and post them.
For now I have pictures of the top with all the darned holes bored. The part I screwed up on the first pass. I think it is awesome!
See all the holes all in a line equally spaced! Eat your heart out Festool... Well I did have help and below is the rig and what I used for a jig. My jig really did not work! I will show you the disaster latter. Right now I am basking in the success!
Feskit pro jig work very smoothly and exactly as advertised. Not sure if it is still available. I ordered it off E-bay from England and it was worth every penny. More latter on all this.

The lift and cranks are just visible and the vises are obvious but look at that top! |
